Chocolate Covered Strawberry Smoothie Bowl

This chocolate covered strawberry smoothie bowl is like having dessert for breakfast…except healthier!

Rich cacao powder, hormone balancing healthy fats, plant-based protein, and fiber-rich fruit and veggies combine to create a decadent and indulgent smoothie you will love!

It’s sugar-free, vegan, and is loaded with a balance of macronutrients to keep you full and nourished until lunch.

The best protein powder for smoothies

I recently tried Truvani Plant-Based Protein powder in chocolate and vanilla and fell in love with the taste, nutrition profile, and the company’s strict standards. No, I am not sponsored by them — I just love everything about their protein powder!

Truvani takes their ingredient sourcing very seriously. Their protein powder is certified organic, non-GMO and has only 6 whole food ingredients. It’s also tested for heavy metals and glyphosate, which is very important to me, and should be to you too! You can learn more about Truvani’s test results here.

Some of my other favorite protein powders:

Do protein powders contain heavy metals?

Should you be concerned about heavy metals in your protein powder? Recently, there have been concerns about the presence of heavy metals in protein powders.

Ingesting sufficient quantities of heavy metals is associated with adverse human health effects, potentially including carcinogenesis, neurotoxicity, nephrotoxicity and reproductive issues (1).

This is why it’s so important to do your own research as a consumer before trying a product!

Does cacao powder contain heavy metals?

Similar to protein powders, cacao can be high in heavy metals. My favorite cacao brand of choice is by Terrasoul Organics. They test all their cacao products for heavy metals with a third party laboratory.

Chocolate Covered Strawberry Smoothie Bowl Ingredients

This smoothie bowl gets its creamy, dessert like base thanks to steamed then frozen cauliflower and avocado. Veggies in a smoothie?! I promise you can’t even taste them!

Here’s what else you need:

  • Cauliflower – Adds a thick texture to the smoothie. Cauliflower is also loaded with phytonutrients, antioxidants and fiber!
  • Avocado – Makes this smoothie bowl creamy and decadent.
  • Chocolate Protein Powder – I used my new favorite chocolate plant-based protein powder by Truvani, but you can substitute with any protein powder here! Truvani also makes a vanilla version.
  • Almond Milk – I like using my homemade almond milk in smoothies, or you can use store-bought. You ideally want to find a clean brand without added sugar or gums!
  • Almond Butter – Another healthy fat that gives the smoothie a nice flavor.
  • Hemp Seeds – For an extra protein and fiber punch!
  • Spinach – Leafy greens add fiber, antioxidants and minerals.
  • Strawberries – Strawberries are loaded with antioxidants and provide a healthy carbohydrate source.
  • Cacao PowderCacao powder is packed with nutrients including iron, magnesium and antioxidants.
  • Maca Powder – Maca is a superfood and an adaptogen that helps your body adapt to stressors, just like reishi! It can also enhance mood and help to balance hormones. It’s added in this smoothie for the malty taste it provides. Raw maca powder will provide the most benefits, but if you have a sensitive stomach, the gelatinized version is easier to digest.

The best blender for smoothies

A high-speed blender is key for creating a smooth and creamy smoothie. Last year we invested in a Vitamix blender and it’s been one of our best decisions! In my opinion, once you try a Vitamix, you will never go back!

Another option is to use a single-serve blender like the NutriBullet. It’s also great for travel!

How to Make A Chocolate Covered Strawberry Smoothie Bowl

Add all your ingredients to your blender of choice (high-speed or single-serve) and blend it up!

Pro Tip: Steaming the cauliflower makes it easier to digest and allowing it to freeze adds the perfect thick texture to smoothie bowls! I like to pre steam my cauliflower florets and store them in the freezer so they’re ready whenever I want to add to a smoothie.
